Phase 1 discovery foundation
Help the right readers find your book before you spend money on marketing.
Phase 1 builds the discovery foundation: clear reader alignment, obvious genre signaling, and metadata that algorithms can understand so your book becomes visible and recognizable.
What “book discovery” means
Discovery is the process of readers becoming aware that a book exists and recognizing it as relevant through browsing, search, recommendations, and lists. Marketing converts that awareness into action. The system fixes discovery first so later marketing has a stronger foundation.
Phase 1 steps
- Define the ideal reader. Identify who the book is for, the emotional promise, and the frustration or need the book addresses.
- Collect real reader language. Gather the phrases readers actually use in search and listings.
- Lock positioning. Use comparable titles and a clear recognition statement.
- Optimize title and blurb opening. Make genre and promise obvious quickly.
- Choose categories and keywords. Favor specific, relevant reader intent over broad volume.
- Measure discovery signals. Track impressions, movement, saves, and engagement before escalating promotion.
Use discovery as the foundation, not the finish line.
Once the book is easier to find and recognize, later campaigns, author promotion, newsletter exposure, and paid visibility have a clearer job to do.
